The only music videos that mattered in 2009

No other videos mattered this year...impressive because one of said videos came out in October of 2008.

"Shoulda put a ring on it,” entered our pop culture lexicon and proclamations of being “a free bitch, baby” littered everyone’s News Feed.

Spawning a slew of spoofs since the '08 release, Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it) became the video that wouldn't die (Even the Chippettes did their own take). Beyonce took the ‘less-is-more’ philosophy and ran with it…err, danced with it. A sound stage, three leotards, one mechanical glove and three “single” ladies later—voila! A hit is born. Perhaps the most effective mainstream viral music video ever? I think so.

On the other end of the pop prism, Lady Gaga’s ‘more-is-more’ Bad Romance took advantage of a season’s worth of Alexander McQueen, razorblade sunglasses, a hairless pussycat, latex costumes, a busy Russian bathhouse filled with mobsters, product placement, crystal headpieces, a fur wedding dress, fire, Illumunati symbols (lol) and a personal orbit. Between the visuals and the lyrics, the references were just as random and varied: Nosferatu (and vampireism), Hitchcock, the twist, Bollywood, evolution and the sex trade. Well, she certainly isn’t boring.

You've Changed

I love Sia...her last album is still in rotation. She's working with Christina Aguilera on X-tina's upcoming CD and in the meantime, she's released this delicious track. The accompanying video is filled with GIF-able moments and LOL-tastic facial expressions.

O Canada!

These patriotic RED (see what I did there?) hot mittens are all the buzz- haven't you heard? The fleece-lined mitts make great stocking-stuffers and are flying off shelves countrywide. And why wouldn't they? At $10 CAD a pair, I regret not buying more.

I've been wanting them for weeks and they've been sold out at every Bay store...UNTIL TODAY. I found a pair and snapped them up instantly. P even managed to score a S/M size for himself (S/M sizes are REALLY rare).

Run, don't walk.

dw!

Sorry for the lack of posts...it's been kinda crazy. Also, the only things I find worth posting are of Gaga and if I post them all, this would quickly resemble (more so than now!) a Gaga fan site!

Anyway! Soon enough, I will post more and more often.

I'm just here to start my little Christmas wishlust. Yes, my wishlust...things I am lusting for (in no particular order):

1. Tom Ford cologne
2. Light grey, military shouldered, chest pocketed, double-breasted, three-quarter length (maybe a little shorter) peacoat. This would mark year three of this search. Express in the states is the closest thing I found to it...but it's still questionable.
3. Kiehls products from the blue Facial Fuel line...particularly the Facial Fuel daily moisturizer AND the gel wash.
4. New glasses (seeing, not sun)
5. Starbucks g/c
6. Gas g/c
7. IKEA g/c
8. Club Monaco g/c
9. Donate to the repair-my-car fund
10. iPhone desktop charger (but I just might end up buying this myself)

As I think of anything more, I'll add it in- any suggestions?

Perfection.

I can't even begin to say what I feel...this is just epic and fierce and amazing and innovative and flawless and scary and ferocious....Lady Gaga's Bad Romance premiered today after a long wait. And was it ever worth the wait. So.much.McQueen.

Look closely. This is SO NSFW...but most people you work with are probably squares and wouldn't notice anyway.

Where the Wild Things Are

Brazilian babe, Isabeli Fontana is on the cover of November's French Vogue. I love this entire shoot...from the model, the body paint, the clothes...it's just another reason why French Vogue is better than it's American counterpart.

NARS 15

Fran├žois Nars is celebrating the 15th anniversary of the founding of his eponymous company by combining two of his favorite things — beauty products and photography — in a new book.

Nars, creative director and founder of the company which bears his name, did both the makeup and the photography for the book, 15x15. It's due out in mid-November for 30 days only at 15x15project.com.

The book features portraits of 15 celebrities: Marc Jacobs, Isabella Rossellini, Amber Valletta, Dayle Haddon, Naomi Campbell, Amanda Lepore, Daphne Guinness, Fran├žois Vincentelli, Natasha Poly, Lisa Marie Smith, Olivier Theyskens, Carla Gugino, Shalom Harlow, Tyson Ballou and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

“Basically, I wanted people who reflected my taste, friends and people I admired for their look and talent,” said Nars. “I love the way Marc looks, but also what he is and does. I tried to pick people not just for looks, but for talent.

Among the varied images: Nars’ photo of Jacobs was inspired by a Richard Avedon image of Sixties supermodel China Machado and Nars Dovima Nail Polish (a tomato-red shade named for another Sixties-era supermodel who was a favorite of Avedon’s.) “It is really an homage to Avedon, who I’ve admired for years,” said Nars. Proceeds from Jacobs’ image will go to AmFar. Catherine Deneuve in Belle de Jour was Nars’ inspiration for his portrait of Valletta.

The Nars lipstick of the same shade, a sheer beige, was the product used in the shot. Profits will go to The Friendly House. Haddon wears Nars’ Butterfield 8 Lip Lacquer in a shot inspired by Elizabeth Taylor’s role in the movie of the same name. Her proceeds will benefit WomenOne.

Isabella Rossellini appears in a Junya Watanabe top wearing Nars’ Misfit Duo Eyeshadow. Her portrait references her most recent project, Green Porno, a series of short films examining the sex lives of bugs. The project was written and directed by Rossellini and features her. Proceeds of her pictures will benefit The Guide Dog Foundation.

“There’s something very different on every page,” said Nars. “You don’t get bored.”

I have this. I love it.

This Shades of Greige cardigan is described as "...super chunky, contemporary yet not overtly trendy." Shawl collar, button front closures and front pockets. Wool blend (there's some Alpaca in there).

It's getting chilly out there...I have a few cardigans and some wool scarves I cannot live without...as well as my 3/4 down-filled parka. What can YOU not live without during a Great White North winter?

"They say this country is equal, but it is not equal if it is sometimes."

Gaga spoke at the National Equality March Rally. Wow. Lady Gaga on C-Span, Lady Gaga screaming "ARE YOU LISTENING???" and "Bless God and Bless the gays!" I'm in awe. She is everything that's been missing in music for so long. There might be a lot of Gaga posted on this blog, but really, who else is pushing the envelope the way she is?

Are you listening?

And some pics of her marching with the masses:

The Fame Monster

The Fame Monster comes out on November 24th 2009 in two formats. Standard and Deluxe. No clue what the difference is yet, except that the deluxe will only be issued in 10'000 copies (!!!).

Here are the covers, both shot by Hedi Slimane. I think they're beautiful. Not sold on the font though.

Bad Romance

I love Alexander McQueen. His stuff is never safe and always re-imagines/marriages gothic and romantic with contemporary and avant-garde. Here is his complete S/S 2010 collection from Paris Fashion Week. Just LOOK at the shoes! The prints are so intricate and the silhouettes...speechless...I've never seen such shapes before.

Now if only someone could get the man himself a stylist.
